Procedure
Review with students the significance of the Senufo doors as well as the doors from other cultures. Have them think about and discuss how these doors represented the people inside. Decorated outsides can symbolize what people find inside.
1. Discuss with students what are items that have special significance to them/what do they treasure. What would they like this treasure to hold?
2. Have students plan what the lid of the box will look like. Place school photo
in center of paper and design a frame. Discuss with students how to create a visually interesting frame (i.e., repetition of patterns, visual symbols used, etc.).
3. Distribute boxes.
4. Demonstrate how to apply papier-mâché and newspaper strips. Wipe papier-
mâché on one strip of newspaper strip, place vertically around the box (will wrap all the way around) tuck extra inside the box along lid or inside side of box. Continue to papier-mâché the entire outside of the box, overlapping each section of newspaper about 1/8".
5. Papier-mâché inside of box in similar way.
6. Make sure all parts of box are covered and that newspaper is smooth.
7. Add a second layer of papier-mâché with white paper towel strips in same fashion, but place these strips in a horizontal position.
8. Make sure all the newspaper is covered completely with white paper towels and that this layer is smooth. To make sure it is smooth, have students use hands with a little papier-mâché on them to rub the paper smooth. This will dry white.
9. After papier-mâché is dry, create frame on lid of the box. Place papier-mâchéd white paper towel strips in fashion of design (i.e., flat and thick to create raised surface, twisted, spiraled, etc.).
10. Allow to dry.
11. Use tempera paint to color entire box, inside and outside.
12. Use markers to add embellishing designs, encourage students to be as creative as possible and thoughtful in selecting overall design (i.e., strips, dots, stars, hearts, squiggly lines, triangles, checker boxes, plaid, etc.).
13. Finish by gluing the student's school picture in center of the frame
14. Possibility: Use Modge Podge® to glaze over entire box. This will seal in the color and create a shiny finish. Use a sponge brush to apply. Don't worry it will go on thick and look white, but it will dry clear!
15. Students could embellish with found objects (i.e., buttons, beads, ribbons, stamps, dried flowers, other pictures). Can Modge Podge® over these items as well.
Suggestions
Allow box to dry with lid propped open so the lid won't seal shut while papier-mâché is drying.
