Math Games

TSORO YEMATATU
This game for two players originated in Zimbabwe.

Materials
The name of this game means the "stone game played with three."

  • Sheet of unlined paper, at least 8 inches square
  • Sheet of light cardboard slightly bigger than the paper
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Marker
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • 3 counters of 2 different kinds

To Make the Game Board:

1. The game board is a triangle with 2 equal sides. Use a pencil and ruler to draw the triangle on the paper.

2. Draw a line from the top of the triangle to the middle of opposite line, dividing the triangle into two equal parts.

Tsoro Game Setup

3. Then draw a horizontal line across the middle of the triangle. Mark the points where the lines intersect.

4. Glue the paper to a piece of cardboard.

To Play the Game:

1. The players take turns putting a counter on the points of the triangle where the line intersect, leaving one empty point.

2. The first player then moves one of his counters into the empty space. Other counters may be jumped. Then the other player moves one of his counters into the empty space left by the first player.

Winning the Game:
The first player to make a row of three of his counters wins. It's possible that this game can last a long time without one player being able to complete a row of three. When that happens that game is called a draw.
